Interview - S. Rajeswari: A satisfying journey in music - Hema Iyer Ramani

“Two roads diverged in a wood , and I-

I took the one less travelled by,

And, that has made all the difference.”
- Robert Frost

The story of musician S. Rajeswari who was conferred with the M.S. Subbulakshmi Award by Tamizh Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram  earlier this year, is one such story where she had to make her choices when she came to the fork in the road.

She talks about her journey and her chance encounter with a dance legend, Kumari Kamala, which brought in a new facet to her singing and soon, she carved a niche for herself, and came to be applauded for her contribution to dance music. She soon was the voice behind several prima-donnas of her time.

Hema Ramani's interview/article is very well compiled. Rajeswari is a musicians' musician with deep knowledge of her profession. A well sought after musician. She has also sung for us couple of times and one time at Bharatkalaachar stage she sang Tamil viruttam extempore followed my extempore delineation without any pre rehearsed setup. I went on spontaneously creating on the stage inspired by her BHaava laden music , and she just followed me without any hitch as though she knew what I am going to do. such is her involvement when she accompany Bharatanaatyam artists. Her versatility is amazing. She is an excellent teacher, say all her students in college as well as private students. They say she feeds them like a mother at home. She shares some gooddies with us too which we enjoy very much.May God bless RAjeswari.
