I suppose they expect me to tell them to practice tatkar every day for several hours, followed by an orderly regimen of bol parhant and repetitions of chakkurs, tukras, parans, paramelu, kavita torahs etcetera etcetera etcetera .......
But that's not the advice I give. I speak more about longevity in terms of sustaining our lives as creative artists within a supportive community, and of maintaining the "life of the mind" while sharing what we know and appreciating the gifts of others.

So well written.
ReplyDeleteJanaki my Guru bahin, thanks for imparting this wisdom! You are an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThough I stopped dancing Kathak many years ago due to health reasons, I regret that I never took it a step further to innovate, as you did. I always felt I still hadn't mastered the technique enough. Yet I was caught in the trap of wanting to look like everyone else in Maharaji's following, the seniors (now Gurus themselves).
You're fortunate to look back with satisfaction, quite deservedly, of your path and work!
