Kathak Kumbha! - Dance Matters: Column by Ashish Mohan Khokar

.....Fast forward to today 2025. SNA has an active and hands-on chairperson Dr. Sandhya Purecha, who is both smart to games people play and artistically knowledgeable too. Being an academic, she brooks no nonsense and is no push-over either. Under her and Raju Das' guidance, the director of Kathak Kendra, Pranaame Bhagwati put up a mega Kathak festival from 21-26 March, in Delhi: 150 participating dancers; nearly 50 scholars; 18 sessions in all plus plus plus - that's a book fair, food fair and dance fair. A mela of Kathak, it was!

  2. Cool , Amazing, no hypes .

    Absolutely to the Point

Difficult to digest Though that we (Kathiks) sound like we lack a sound shastrik background. No one ever tried to propogate the shastra connection. The history not allowing us to re establish but hurting to see its fame and purity coming down.
Outside Delhi Kathak has a different flavour and charm . We connoisseurs of dance we dance for /of the shastra don’t know any other game.
How the politically hyped kathak is losing its charm . Sad though

    1. Very artistically written article but it lacks the harshness at some points. While blaming, a vocalist for being late, the management is equally responsible for not wanting to start without a mere guest. Nayantara parpia amazingly established what she had studied and how tall she stands with her grace should be noted while Murli Mohan Kalva had all the resources still couldn’t come on sam at times, it looks a little multifaceted or harshness at times thrown out of proportion to hide true reasons to what happened. Thank you and sorry.

    2. Everyone is entitled to their perspective. However the artist you have mentioned announced that he’s specifically presenting the Nrutta paksha in Anaghat. It’s evident that One doesn’t necessarily have the understanding of the variations of Sam Visam Ateet Anaghat. Many things are clearly for connoisseurs.

    3. Anghat does not mean not coming on sam, there is a sam on anghat and specifically mentioned rules on how you perform it and where it goes, I am sorry if you think everytime she played the manjira and you thought it was the sam.

I especially loved how you included the story behind the rise of the Kathak empire in Delhi, as well as how SNA's culture evolved over time, influenced by various sources. There were so many pieces of information I didn’t know before! looking forward to your next part!
